Sounds of the Universe

The universe above us is one of the most confusing and the most beautiful creations know to this day. The universe has countless times brought us to mind, “What is goin’ on up there?” Well, At 4 AM on September 14, 2015, a gravitational wave was detected and that had never happened in all of human history!!!!

Gravitational waves are  ‘ripples’ in the fabric of space-time caused by some of the most violent and energetic processes in the Universe. Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves in 1916 in his general theory of relativity. The theory of relativity is stated in the laws of physics is that the speed of light is the same for all non-accelerating observers, and Einstein showed that the speed of light is a vacuum and it is the same no matter what the speed at which an observer is traveling; or in other words, to make it a little simpler to understand, let’s have to examples of mirror reflecting mirror and a laser beam lighting through it. Let’s name the first set of the mirrors with a laser beam, Marco, and the second Polo. If Marco and polo both have the speed of light shining through the same way with the same mirrors. Based on the theory of relativity Marco and Polo have to have the same speed when the light travels through the mirror. Even if Marco’s mirrors were in motion the speed of light would be the same the only difference is that since the speed of light equals distance over time. The time would go much slower than Polos due to the distance being in motions therefore if the distance is larger the time must be longer and therefore making it slower. But even if the distance and time changed the speed of light would stay the same no matter what and that is the theory of relativity.

Now the reason I wanted to explain that is because the gravitational wave is because of about 100 years ago, Albert Einstein proposed the existence of gravitational waves. But even if mathematics led to his hypothesis to be true, he believed that actually detecting a graviational wave would never be done they were infinitely tiny and to imagine how small they are, makes this discovery by LIGO high powered lasers throughout Hanford, Washington, and Livingston, Louisiana. Since gravitational waves are not able to be seen for being so incredibly tiny on the electromagnetic spectrum. So they decided to point the “mic” to listen to them.

The lasers were split in two inside of the ultra-high vacuum and it sent the beam down 2.5 miles arms to be set perpendicular to each other. they then are reflected by mirrors placed at each end.

When the gravitational wave passed, space-time is ALTERED!!! Causing the movement to be relative to each other in 1/10,000 width of  PROTON!!! Which is INSANE!!! This changed the relative phase of the light incident when they received optics which then sent it to an optical sensor and it was then measured in a signal or a “chirp”.

To think that we have accomplished… what EINSTEIN thought was not possible. Makes this something to be celebrated about… at least I think so.
